After trying Top Ten Tuesday out last week, I have to say I’m really digging these prompts. This week’s has asked us to select our favorite books within our favorite genre so of course I’m picking Science Fiction. It’s been hard to whittle this down to only ten, but here it goes (in no particular order):
I will never stop telling people how much I loved this book.
One of my favorite reads of all time. Apparently some of the sequels reveal the mysteries of Rama but I prefer the sense of the unknown this one left me with so I haven’t picked them up.
A Wrinkle in Time is the book that really made me fall in love with reading. My mother gave it to me when I was 8 and once I picked it up I couldn’t stop reading. When I finally looked at the clock it was midnight. Midnight- on a school night! My mom always fostered a love of reading in me so she didn’t want to disturb me when I was so clearly lost in this wonderful story. Luckily she let me stay home the next day to finish it. Mom of the Year right there.
Bloody fantastic.
Ender’s Game was one of those books where I totally lost myself for a few hours, fully immersed within it.
Another bloody fantastic read.
It took me a solid 100 pages to get into Red Rising, but once I did I didn’t stop for 3 weeks until I’d read the entire kickass trilogy.
A recent read but one that instantly wedged itself within my favorites shelf.
An utter classic that everyone needs to read at one point in their life.
What top sci-fi book list would be complete without The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?
What is your favorite genre and what are some of your top picks within it? Let me know in the comments or leave a link to your list!
If you want to participate in Top Ten Tuesday, it’s hosted here by That Artsy Reader Girl.
Science Fiction is my favourite genre. Great list. I agree with all of your picks.

Oh wow you’ve got some classics on here! I only had one or two. Most of my fantasy reading was done later in life.

I’m making a point this year to read the sci-fi classics I haven’t read. So far it’s been hit or miss but there are still some great gems from the 20th century.

I read science fiction way back when I was a teen and when I was in my twenties, so most of my favorites are older titles. Some of them (that you didn’t list) are:
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
The Word for World is Forest
Oryx and Crake
The Handmaid’s Tale
Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
Redwall
To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
Thank you for sharing your wonderful list.

Rendezvous with Rama, The City and the Stars, Ender’s Game (and sequels), A Wrinkle in Time and Hitchhiker’s Guide would be on my list, too, along with Dune by Frank Herbert and Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Have to think about the other two! Maybe Foundation by Isaac Asimov might be one. The Forever War has been on my TBR for years, must get to it sometime. Great list!
