Even though I’m living in the UK now I still get my Independence Day on every July. Unfortunately I don’t get the day off over here, but I’m going to celebrate with sparklers and a bonfire later tonight. To help get me in the spirit, I donned a USA t-shirt and hat and headed outside to finally hang some souvenirs I brought from my last trip home:
Once they were hung up, I kicked back with an ARC I received in the post today from Penguin, Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line by Deepa Anappara.
“Nine-year-old Jai watches too many reality cop shows, thinks he’s smarter than his friend Pari (even though she always gets top marks) and considers himself to be a better boss than Faiz (even though Faiz is the one with a job). When a boy at school goes missing, Jai decides to use the crime-solving skills he has picked up from episodes of Police Patrol to find him. With Pari and Faiz by his side, Jai ventures into some of the most dangerous parts of the city; the bazaar at night, and even the railway station at the end of the Purple Line. But kids continue to vanish, and the trio must confront terrified parents, an indifferent police force and soul-snatching djinns in order to uncover the truth.“
Pretty cool cover and synopsis, huh? I’m looking forward to telling you guys all about it once I’m done reading it.
Are any of you fellow Americans? If so, how are you celebrating the holiday weekend? Let me know in the comments!
Love this! Such a cool souvenir from back home. I am American and I live in the U.S. On the actual day, I went to a local water park and that was nice. Saw some fireworks last night!

That sounds awesome, what a great 4th of July!
It’s totally legal to buy fireworks here so when they were on sale around New Years I bought some, saved them, and set them off on Friday night to varying levels of success. I really miss the big American fireworks shows!
