Top Ten Tuesday: Spring 2020 TBR

Winter is nearly over! To mark the changing of the seasons, this week’s Top Ten Tuesday is about the books we plan to read over the next few months. If you’d like to take part in TTT, head over to That Artsy Reader Girl to find out more.

Spring is my absolute favorite time of year. Now that I’m apparently old and boring, a good chunk of my spare time is spent gardening and this is about the time that many of my plants reemerge from their winter naps. I’m looking forward to seeing all my flowers in bloom again! Yeah, I’m seriously too cool for school over here.

Also, my wedding anniversary is March 20th, a date we picked because it is the first day of spring. We thought that it would be a perfect date to celebrate our marriage as it is a day known for fresh and hopeful starts. Plus it was on a Friday the year we got married so we were given a hefty discount on the venue hire! 😛

Many of the books I read tend to be on the heavier side, but with everything going on right now I’m going to aim for some lighter reads in the coming spring months. I have several ARCs from publishers I’ll be reading, but my TTT this week will mostly focus on my “for fun” books and library holds.

The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James

It may not necessarily be light reading, but a suspense novel is usually a solid choice if you want to distract yourself from the woes of everyday life. It’s gotten decent reviews and my library hold should be coming up in the next couple weeks so hopefully I’ll be able to start this soon!

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

This is another thriller/suspense novel I’ve seen a lot of buzz about. My dad read it and really liked it, too. Also not light reading, I’m nonetheless looking forward to reading it once my library has a copy available for me.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Homegoing is another book I’ve had on reserve at my library for awhile and I should be getting it in a week or so. Even though it’s not a whimsical book, I have a feeling this book will do well in sweeping me away.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Wow, I’m really not doing well with this whole “read fun stuff for spring!” thing am I? I know this book will probably destroy my soul, but we’re planning to go to Russia later this year and I’m trying to read as many Russian books as I can before we go.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

Finally, something that won’t make me weep uncontrollably! One of my friends is a die hard Harry Potter fan and when I recently showed her the pictures of me meeting Daniel Radcliffe, she thrust a few HP books into my hands. Apparently I’m not allowed to show off that photo again until I actually read more of the books.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

I bought a copy of this at a library sale a year or so ago and have been meaning to read it since. Now that I’ve heard that it’s being adapted into a movie and is featuring a seriously stellar cast that includes one of my favorite actors, Sam Rockwell, I’ve decided to get a move on with reading it. Plus the book was written by the Animorphs author and Animorphs ❤

The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester

This was high on my TBR last year but I kept putting it off, not sure why. I’m trying to read more classic sci-fi in general so this will be one I’ll try to read ASAP.

The Murderer’s Ape by Jakob Wegelius

I sense an ape theme going on! I purchased this at a thrift store a couple of months ago purely because I fell in love with the cover. Yes, I totally judge books by their covers.

I, Q by John De Lancie and Peter David

Bought as a joke by my husband, I’ve been informed by fellow Trekkies that the book is actually a lot of fun to read. I need laughs more than ever right now.

The Android’s Dream by John Scalzi

When I was in California in December visiting my parents, I made sure to stop by my favorite book store in the world Recycle Books. I exercised amazing restraint and ended up only walking out with a few books instead of the dozens I wanted. This was one of my selections and looking at the reviews it’ll be a major mood booster.

My Upcoming ARCs

I’ve recently been approved for several books that I can’t wait to dive into. I’ll be telling you more about them in the weeks to come, but for now I thought I’d at least mention the ones I’m really excited about.

 

• The Ghosts of Sherwood by Carrie Vaughn: Robin and Maid Marian’s happily ever after turns out to be not so happy afterall.
• After She Wrote Him by Sulari Gentill: Which came first, the author or the character?
• Woman in Red: Magdalene Speaks by Krishna Rose: I’m interested to see what the author has done with such a famous yet essentially unknown historical figure.
• A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow: MERMAIDS!! Enough said.
